Course Description: A review of the main capital tax issues which arise on the disposal of a family business, whether by succession to the next generation or by way of sale. This session considers how capital tax charges, particularly capital gains tax, can arise and some means by which the client may plan to mitigate these liabilities by pre-sale structuring and optimising the available reliefs.
About the Presenter: Russell Cockburn B.Sc.(Hons) FFTA, is an independent taxation consultant, author and lecturer. After a post graduation career in manufacturing industry as a production manager Russell trained as an Inspector of Taxes gaining a range of tax experience in HMRC.
He joined the accountancy profession in 1987 as a corporate tax manager for a medium sized firm of chartered accountants going on to head up the business tax department for a smaller firm before establishing his own taxation and training consultancy practice in 1989, with personal and business tax clients all over the UK. He represents individuals, firms and companies before the Tax Tribunals, and is also Tax Partner/ for Lamont Pridmore Chartered Accountants
Russell also writes on tax matters for a number of well-known publications and is regular Corporation Tax correspondent for the Institute of Chartered Secretaries monthly magazine. His first book, in 2002, was The ICSA 2003/2004 Tax Guide, followed by “Small Business Tax Planning – Everything You Need to know from Start-up to Retirement” in 2010. He also edits and sub-edits tax digests and other tax books on a regular basis.
